The SOM examination series has been a fixture in ENT practices for decades and is aimed at clinicians who want an uncomplicated but highly precise diagnostic instrument. A 3x or 5x magnification changer works with apochromatically corrected, interchangeable objectives from f=200 to 400 mm, and the optional Kaps Variflex-100 covers 220 mm to 320 mm from a single compact lens with integrated lens protection. Electromagnetic Free Motion brakes release at the press of a handle button and lock the head again the moment it is let go, with mechanical balancing keeping movement even when cameras or observer optics are fitted. Integrated LED illumination of roughly 50,000 hours runs quietly and without noticeable heat, with cold light or xenon available as options.
